Considerations for DP Reel

Max run time: 2 minutes.

I’d like the reel to show how my visual aesthetic (framing, composition) translates to motion.

A few differences from my photo work:

  • The majority of my photos are wide shots – for the reel, I’m totally down with adding mediums and macros to keep the pace/vibe going and to add interest when necessary.

  • People don’t need to look as somber as in my photos (they can, but def not requirement).

  • I’d like to try to show some racial, gender, economic diversity when possible.

Music/sound can be anything. I don’t envision any sound bites being included.

For the first time in a decade I’m not trying to sell a client on a heartfelt or emotional or informative or inspirational story! I’d be happy if some weirdness or tension or humor came through.

I basically like most of the interview shots and wides in this piece!

When people ask us what we do, we usually respond simply with, "we direct things." But in reality, what we do is so much more than that. And actually it's what we GET to do. Besides lugging hundreds of pounds of equipment across the city, the state, and sometimes the country, we get to meet incredible people who are doing and making incredible things. We get to create pieces and tell stories. We get to work with crazy-talented DPs, editors, sound mixers, and visual artists. And we get to collaborate with some of the most important and generous organizations doing the work to make this world a better place. Some of these organizations we've had the good fortune of working with include the Vilcek Foundation, The New York Times, PowerPlay NYC, Condé Nast, Time Inc., and Wholesome Wave. Overall it's a pretty sweet deal. And we're thrilled to continue this journey with the old and the new. (ESPNw, we're looking at you...hit us up!)

In general, if it seems like any city/landscape shots need to be used, I don't hate the NYC shots but also don't think they're special on their own
